CVE-2026-43037
This vulnerability allows an attacker to trigger a buffer overflow in the Linux kernel’s IPv6 tunnel handling, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. It occurs when the kernel misinterprets packet data during error handling, enabling an overflow of a fixed‑size stack buffer. The issue has been fixed by clearing a control buffer and adding header validation.
An official fix is available, so this entry is kept for 30 days and then removed automatically.
Who is affected
All Linux kernel users running versions prior to the fix, notably kernel 7.0 and earlier, are affected. This includes typical users running standard Linux distributions.
Real-world impact
An attacker could cause the kernel to crash or execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges, compromising the entire system.
Why this severity
The CVSS score of 9.8 reflects the lack of authentication or user interaction required, the high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability, and the presence of a buffer overflow that can lead to arbitrary code execution.
What to do about it
- 01Verify the current kernel version.
- 02Upgrade to a kernel version that includes the fix (e.g., Linux kernel 7.0 or later).
- 03Reboot the system to load the updated kernel.
