CVE-2026-31607
A flaw in the Linux kernel’s USB/IP client allows a malicious server to send a response with an inflated packet count, causing a heap out‑of‑bounds write. The issue can lead to arbitrary code execution or a system crash. It has been fixed by validating the packet count before overwriting it.
An official fix is available, so this entry is kept for 30 days and then removed automatically.
Who is affected
Linux kernel users running the USB/IP client component, especially those on older kernel versions before the patch. System administrators and users who enable USB/IP on their machines are typical affected parties.
Real-world impact
An attacker who controls a USB/IP server could trigger the client to write beyond its allocated memory, potentially allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary code, gain elevated privileges, or cause a denial of service.
Why this severity
The CVSS score of 9.8 reflects that the vulnerability can be exploited remotely without authentication or user interaction, and that it compromises confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system.
What to do about it
- 01Upgrade your Linux kernel to a version that includes the CVE-2026-31607 fix.
- 02Reboot the system to load the new kernel.
